Hello Jessy, the garden is coming alive and we should be harvesting three or four weeks from now. El Elohe would like to thank all those who made it possible for us to set up this vegetable garden.
Hello Mobile Movement, this is patrick, the hands and feet on the ground. Four projects have so far this year been funded and one of the most impressive is El elohe. We have so far put up the irrigation kit but luckly we wont be using it for sometime...Rains in plenty. Three planting seaons have beeb planned of two months each, with harvests every two months. There is going to be experimentation with both local and exotic vegetables...Broccoli, red and yello capiscum, asaparagus, cauliflower chines caobbage, lettuce just to see what works best.
Right now, very popular local vegetables; Amaranth, african nightshade, spider plant and crotalaria. we hope this be a hit with the people a round.
At this point, i can faill to appreciate the mobile movement community, all the Individuals who donated just to make this possible Am inviting you to follow this project's progress. Questions and comments are welcome. Thank you very much.
Hello team, Karun here congratulations on getting your project up and running. I am very proud and touched by all of your dedication. PLease send photos of the veggies once they are growing, or more visible. Also let us know why you chose those varieties, and not the more traditional greens?
Excellent news! Most definitely looking forward to reading more updates. Well done!

Thank you, Ismail and Karun, for your comments. Karun, we actually started with 4 types of fast-maturing traditional greens - vegetable amaranth, african nightshade, clotalaria and spider plant. Our target market is the immediate neighbourhood. Buyers will come to the garden so we will not incur marketing, storage and transport expenses. Since demand for traditional greens is high, we want to create a replica of this garden on an adjacent plot and later try out some exotic vegetables and also herbs such as rosemary and thyme. We have uploaded recent pictures of the greens, some of which are ready for market. Next week we'll start selling so please log in to see money changing hands.

It has taken us 10 weeks to complete the first production cycle. Total sales were 48 USD. For the second cycle, our target is 50 USD of sales in 5 weeks. We will do two things to meet this target. First, only the two fastest growing vegetables - spider plant and amaranth - will be planted. They will be harvested in week 5. Second, some of the greens remained on the seed beds much longer than necessary. We will expand our market beyond the neighbourhood so that all ready-for-market produce is sold out within three days.

Bad news...our beautiful garden had to give way to ongoing fiber optic installation works. We will have to wait until the cable is buried and then rebuild from scratch.

It has been a great experience. We had to start all over again. Water storage was a challenge in 2010 but we now have a 10,000 litre tank thanks to Athi Water Services Board. Happy to report the garden is producing vegetables now. We hope for great things this year. We want to have a second garden in place by May 2011. It looks like food prices are on the rise again. We hope to make a difference for the community by providing affordable and nutritious food. Thank you all for the support.
