NYC Jewelry Designer is working with Victorious Youth Group
In January, 2009, Mobile Movement launched a test version of our website to see how the mobile phones and website would work. During that time, we put out a call to action for the Victorious Youth Group, bone craft designers from the Kibera slum. They were looking for new designs and ways they could expand their market.
Olia Gitman, a famous New York City jewelry designer stepped up to the plate. She looked at some of the bone beads Victorious had made and set out to both give the group some design inspiration and also potentially partner with them to create some new designs she may be able to use in her work.
A couple of weeks later, Victorious sent some images of the work they had created, based on Olia's designs, and the group is now refining the design and discussing possibilities to continue their work together.
During the process here is what Olia had to say:
"I am a jewelry designer so this work is close to my heart. I love the idea of Mobile Movement. Its a great way of connecting people based on their expertise. Its the saying "Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime". Its ambitious that my designs can feed any man for a lifetime but its still the idea of giving something that can possibly provide a form of a repeating income. The thing I am giving is also coming from my own creativity so that is exciting."-Olia Gitman
We look forward to seeing what Victorious and Olia will do together this year!?.
